Columbia/HCA Healthcare's bid for Ohio Blue Cross and Blue Shield (Cleveland, OH) that was rejected by regulators has put the Blues in a worse spot than Columbia. The Blues will pay a penalty of $50 million if the deal does not go through. Columbia plans to restructure the $299.5-million acquisition attempt to get around regulators, but in the meantime it also announced that it will be acquiring a series of hospitals in Columbus, OH.

The deal marks the beginning of a series of consolidation efforts in the industry, including Aetna's acquiring of US Healthcare. Columbia is expected to benefit greatly from the cash stream from Blue Cross.
