Computed tomography and high resolution computed tomography of pneumoconioses

Article Abstract:

The initiation and enforcement of industrial and occupational safety measures have diminished the incidence of new cases of silicosis, asbestosis, and other pneumoconioses. However, chronic cases continue to require evaluation and treatment. The assessment of these conditions has traditionally been done using chest X-rays. Newer technologies, such as computed tomography (CT) and high resolution computed tomography (HRCT), are currently available for these assessments. Both of these methods can be effective in detecting lung disease that is not apparent using X-ray imaging. HRCT has recently been used to diagnose and characterize asbestosis. The clinically significant features detected by each of the specific technologies, and recommended sequence of their application, are defined in detail.
