Constructivism: a naturalistic methodolgy for nursing inquiry

Article Abstract:

The constructivist research paradigm, once called naturalistic inquiry, offers a new approach to health research but is not often recognized in popular research texts. Competing paradigms are positivism, postpositivism and critical theory. Constructivist researchers have a subjectivist and transactional approach. They seek to determine essential meanings, not just descriptions. The inquirer discusses topics or issues for investigation with other practitioners to clarify thinking.

Experiencing the whole

Article Abstract:

Wholeness is a concept basic to the practice of nursing. The episodes and elements of life should not be separated in order to accurately diagnose and treat, as is often the case. Medical professionals tend to avoid wholeness since it cannot be externally measured or controlled, but wholeness can be used to help patients as part of a hermeneutic dialectic process. The emerging unitary-transformative paradigm in nursing is consistent with the concept of wholeness.

Psychological well-being of Cambodian women in resettlement

Article Abstract:

Nurse assumptions about Cambodian women refugees can create biases which interfere with appropriate caregiving. Many nurses tend to make assumptions about Cambodian women based on Western values, which emphasize the individual. Most Cambodian women refugees are more concerned with harmony and balance in the group. Nurses need to avoid marginalizing refugee women's experiences.
