Corporate political strategy: incorporating the management of public policy issues into hospital strategy

Article Abstract:

Hospital survival depends much on the ability of the management to respond properly to and influence sociopolitical policy issues. An analysis of the life cycle of public policy issues was made, in an effort to educate hospital managers on when and how to influence the development of public policies. It also identifies sources of policy issues in the hospital industry which include government regulation, community groups and patients, business community, health insurance companies, and managed care organizations.

Commentary on Arndt and Bigelow

Article Abstract:

Two articles on total quality management (TQM) in hospitals and available literature on the topic have three misconceptions. First, the articles claim that the rationality assumption underlying the TQM process has not been questioned. Second, the successful implementation of TQM hospital-wide has not been proven by published case studies. Third, there is a lack of well-designed studies on TQM processes in the health care setting.
