Current environment: near-term industry outlook remains favorable

Article Abstract:

The growth of medical device industry and its sales are discussed. The year 2005 has been profitable for the industry and the future outlook appears to be positively skewed. While cost maintenance and pricing have been two issue, which have influenced the sector largely, overall the performance has been good. The battle between Boston Scientific and Johnson and Johnson for acquiring Guidant Corp. for also discussed.

The trends witnessed in healthcare products and supplies industry in the first half of 2005 are discussed and trends for the second half of 2005 and subsequent period are forecasted. The merger of Johnson & Johnson with Guidant is discussed. Other issues like silicone breast implants in United States and the approvals granted by the United States Food and Drug Administration in 2005 are also discussed.
