Economic conditions and alcohol problems

Article Abstract:

Alcohol-related traffic accidents are often attributed to unfavorable economic conditions particularly income reduction. Alcohol consumption and traffic fatalities data from 1975 to 1988 indicate that reduced income, rather than employment, significantly affects hard liquor consumption because of adult drinkers' tendency to save. The same economic conditions have lesser effect on drinking practices among the younger generation who usually drink beer and frequent outside drinking places.
