Establishing a substance abuse treatment program: considerations for the administrator

Article Abstract:

Hospital administrators who wish to initiate substance abuse treatment programs in their communities must consider several factors before implementation. These factors include comprehension of the substance abuse problem, knowledge of the treatment options available and the ability of the hospital to provide treatment specific to each individual. Preparatory steps include educating community members and hospital staff, providing a drug-free environment for employees and adopting a rehabilitative rather than a punitive attitude toward drug abusers.

Patterns of psychological type among health care executives

Article Abstract:

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator was administered to 522 American College of Healthcare Executives affiliated fellows, members and nominees to determine psychological preferences of health services executives. Members were tested for extraversion/introversion, sensing/intuition, judging/perceiving and thinking/feeling preferences. Thinking-judging was the most common type. For-profit health services care administrators preferred intuition types while most non-profit administrators preferred sensing types.

Service quality revisited: striving for a new orientation

Article Abstract:

An examination of customer service quality in hospitals reveals the need for a new service orientation. Service orientation can be defined as the behaviors and attitudes displayed by hospital staff toward patients. Components of a service orientation include likability, social skills and conformity to rules. Unfortunately, there is little information about service in the healthcare industry, and more research is needed.
