Estimating treatment cost functions for progressive diseases: a multiproduct approach with an application to breast cancer

Article Abstract:

A treatment cost function is estimated using the theory of multiproduct cost functions. The cost function is used for progressive diseases wherein the stages at detection of the disease are represented by the output classes. The treated case represents the unit of output within each class. Empirical application to the treatment of breast cancer is presented. Evidence on the economics of screening programs is gathered from the application.

Cost-benefit analysis and mammographic screening: a travel cost approach

Article Abstract:

A cost-benefit methodology was used for the economic evaluation of a health care program using mobile mammographic screening units in the rural areas of Australia. The travel cost approach was used to estimate the benefits of the project as an alternative to the contingent valuation method. Results indicate that the distance of a town from the nearest fixed screening unit is a major factor in estimating the level of welfare benefits.
