Fast balls could be fatal; about seven of every 1,000 young athletes end up in the emergency department because of injuries like Justin's

Article Abstract:

Nine-year-old Justin McQuillen died in 1994 from the impact of a fast baseball against his chest which caused cardiac arrest. His physician, Hershey Medical Center Chief of Pediatric Cardiology Stephen Cyran and Pennsylvania State University Mechanical Engineering Assoc Professor John Gardner are developing a chest protector to prevent these types of injuries to children between the ages of 5 and 14. The lack of fast reflexes and thin chest walls cause these injuries.

The humane touch

Article Abstract:

The Assoc of Women Surgeons works to improve the role of women in surgical residencies throughout the US. Numbering over 1,200 members since its inception in 1986, the group has improved the response of residency programs in such issues as family-leave and compensation for time off. Insurance and pay practices have also been improved at many hospitals. The group helps counsel women who may be experiencing difficulty in an all-male surgical environment.
