Faster, stronger, private?

Article Abstract:

Public hospitals that converted into private, not-for-profit entities totaled 348 from 1980 to 1995, reflecting a trend of privatization in the industry. This number, representing 16% of US hospitals, reached a higher level than conversion of public nonprofit hospitals to for-profit ownership. In addition, most of the privatization of hospitals occurred in urban areas where city governments strove to give up their healthcare responsibilities. Many believe that converting public hospitals to private facilities is the key to their survival.

A virtual network gets real

Article Abstract:

HealthGroup of Alabama represents a variation on the 'hospital network' theme. The organization is not-for-profit management company that functions like a network. It consists of six hospitals' CEOs, whose services are leased back to their respective hospitals. One benefit of the arrangement is that a capital investment in a unified ownership system was not required.
