Guiding light: will the Justice Department's new antitrust guidelines really make a difference to physicians?

Article Abstract:

The American Medical Association is waiting to give its verdict on the new antitrust guidelines outlined by the Justice Dept. with respect to health care provider networks. The most novel addition contained in the guidelines is a provision stipulating that physician networks can escape price-fixing charges if they integrate their clinical facilities without integrating their finances. This new provision is geared toward giving doctors more confidence in establishing health care provider networks.

Show them the money

Article Abstract:

A survey conducted by Merritt, Hawkins & Associates of 300 medical residents showed that 86% would prefer a salary to fee-for-service medicine. The survey also showed that while 29% of residents stated that they would like to work in a single-specialty practice, almost 33% of residents preferred multispecialty groups. An analyst stated that residents prefer the multispecialty groups because they are more viable under managed care and can attract profitable at-risk contracts.

Ties that bind

Article Abstract:

Physicians who sell their practices to management companies may face disappointment if these deals are not handled carefully. Revenues of publicly traded concerns increased dramatically by 49% from the 3rd qtr 1995 to the same period 1996. Physicians should closely examine such management firms and their contracts before selling to them. In addition, some disenchantment can be avoided by naming issues that are important to physicians and setting limits in such arrangements.
