Health care reform advocates urge changes to antitrust laws

Article Abstract:

Health reformers are beginning to question the detrimental effect which antitrust law has on hospital alliances designed to integrate health delivery systems. The American Hospital Association (AHA), incensed by muddled government directives, has launched a study of its own to determine the effect of mergers on the regional healthcare industry. Current Congressional legislation also addresses the issue. One AHA-supported bill, sponsored by Sen. William S. Cohen, would suspend antitrust laws for certain joint hospitals projects.

Factoring in the financials: court gives nod to economic credentialing

Article Abstract:

A Florida trial court has ruled that the Tallahassee Memorial Regional Medical Center can deny physician Harry Rosenblum hospital privileges because he directs a competing cardiac care unit at another local hospital. The case sets a precedent because it allows a hospital to use an economic basis for choosing its medical staff. The American Medical Association opposes such criteria, and the Florida Medical Association is supporting a bill to ban the use of economic factors in medical staffing decisions.

Documentation crucial to ED risk management

Article Abstract:

Hospitals need to look closely at their communication and documentation processes when overhauling emergency room risk management programs. Hospitals run into liability problems when patients sue the institution and there are no records of the emergency room processes by which doctors based their decisions on at the time. Physicians need to document as well as communicate with the patient their diagnosis in order to ensure proper emergency room care.
