The illusion of control and the importance of community in health care organizations

Article Abstract:

Healthcare system complexity minimizes individuals' abilities to control events, but many healthcare organizations still seek to maintain an illusion of control. Bureaucracy, individualism, scientific methodology and the mistaking of management for leadership contribute to such illusions. Community values, seen from an organizational perspective, can contribute to improved healthcare organization performance.
