Hospital price regulation and expenditure cap policy

Article Abstract:

Many European countries have reduced the budget provisions on health care spending. The various strategies providers make use of in facing this policy and evaluation of its effects on provider and patient surplus is analyzed. Also the influence of this policy when applied to local monopoly hospitals and when applied to hospitals playing Cournot competitors is studied. Through the usage of a two-stage model, it is proved that the policy induces a level of welfare lower than the first best outcome.

The impact of physician characteristics in conditional choice models for hospital care

Article Abstract:

Patient, hospital and physician characteristics interact to influence the choice of institutions to which a patient is admitted. Hospital choice is highly correlated with hospital size, quality, previous utilizations and affiliations while negatively related to distance. Loyalty to one hospital allows physicians easier access to referral systems and familiarization with hospital operations, thus, efficiently providing patient services.

Policy implications of recent hospital competition studies

Article Abstract:

Hospitals have vigorously opposed legislative efforts to impose antrust laws on their sector. They argue that the hospital industry does not fit the standard competition model in which more competition would mean lower prices. However, the proponents of this view do not cite any empirical evidence to support their claims. The hospital industry's opposition to antitrust regulations reflect self-interest.
