Hospitals, allieds ask JCAHO to reconsider indicator mandate

Article Abstract:

The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) will require hospitals to submit data on up to 30 indicators as part of the accreditation process. The program will become mandatory in 1996. The organization plans to offer a national reference data base for hospitals to use in assessing and upgrading their services. The group is offering its own personal computer package for the program or allowing hospitals to use vendor software designed according to JCAHO specifications. JCAHO is working with other hospital groups to coordinate its system with existing systems.

Maryland association strives to improve indicator project

Article Abstract:

The Maryland Hospital Association (MHA) conducts a quality research program in which hospitals measure their performance by using 15 indicators. Hospitals around the globe participate by submitting quarterly data for comparison with comparable figures from other institutions. The comparisons inform institutions on areas that need improvement. The MHA plans to add six new indicators to measure performance in pediatric departments in addition to the current 10 indicators on impatient care and five on outpatient services.
