How much can really be saved by rolling back SCHIP? The net cost of public health insurance for children

Article Abstract:

A research analyzing the economic impact of withdrawal of State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) is presented. The rationality of data in budget advocating such roll back is questioned on the grounds that budget does not consider the expanded base of public coverage through the program. The budget also does not consider the fact that notwithstanding the withdrawal of the program, the highest cost children would have received publicly funded health care even if such expanded base were not there.

Genetic discrimination in health insurance: current legal protections and industry practices

Article Abstract:

Practice of insurance underwriters in relation to genetic discrimination in insurance coverage is investigated. A survey found that in 92 applications, seven were denied, had been placed with a surcharge on premiums, or had limited covered benefits, based on genetic information of the applicants. The impacts of genetic discrimination on clinical trials, and laws against such discrimination are also examined.

Medicare's prospective payment system for skilled nursing facilities: effects on staffing and quality of care

Article Abstract:

The effectiveness of Medicare's prospective payment system for skilled nursing facilities, which was started in 1998 is examined. It was observed that for-profit companies dropped large number of nurses to overcome the elimination of cost reimbursement. Such elimination of cost reimbursement also led to drop in fractional quality of care.
