In the wings: hospitals prepare for new delivery system

Article Abstract:

Florida hospitals are having to sort themselves into Accountable Health Partnerships (AHPs), health networks that include physicians as employees. In some areas, where the managed care industry is well-established, this process has already taken place. For example, AvMed-SanteFe, in Gainesville, already has its own HMO, six hospitals, contracts with 40 others and plans to expand its services across the state. However, Jackson Hospital, on Florida's panhandle, is just beginning to study physician integration.

How one hospital association became the Healthcare Forum

Article Abstract:

The Healthcare Forum changed its focus to senior leadership training when it changed its name from the Assn of Western Hospitals in 1987. In addition to dropping middle management issues, the organization spread from the Western states to cover national and international concerns about creating healthy communities. However, the group continues to study the needs of rural health providers.

It's worth the ... risk

Article Abstract:

Hospitals tend to reap better benefits from risk pools than physicians, according to a survey. Hospitals receive a larger share of any surplus funds than do physicians, 44% to 27%. If hospital risk pools run deficits, nearly a third of them are rescued by the risk pools of primary care physicians and specialists. Of hospitals in risk pools, 77% are in multiyear commercial contracts.
