Lawmakers: cost factors override cost concerns

Article Abstract:

The effect of proposed legislation that would extend Medicare-like benefits to nearly everyone receiving medical care is unclear, but such measures could fail to address the real causes of escalating health care costs. For example, Rep Dan Rostenkowski's health care reform measure could reduce private payers' payments by $1 billion to $21 billion, depending on the resolution of numerous policy decisions. However, the American Hospital Association argues that only fundamental changes in the health care delivery system can control medical costs.

Women's, children's groups say reform debate ignores need

Article Abstract:

Health services most needed by women and children - quality and availability of services and prevention of illness - are overshadowed in 1992 health-care reform legislation by political and financial issues. According to the House Select Committee on Children, Youth, and Families, dependent coverage has been reduced from 52% to 21% during the last 10 years, and 12.2 million children under 21 have no health coverage. Federal grant programs are being ignored. Corporations could reduce their costs by increasing insurance benefits.

High turnover in Congress clouds health issues

Article Abstract:

It is not yet known what affect the high turnover that is anticipated for Congress in the Nov 1992 elections will have on the push for healthcare reform. It has been predicted that 125 to 150 new members will win election in the fall; the majority of them are expected to be Republicans and conservative Democrats. The outcome of the presidential election will also influence healthcare issues.
