Legal and practical impact of clinical practice guidelines on nursing and medical practice

Article Abstract:

The pressure ulcer clinical guideline issued by the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research should be considered a set of recommendations rather than rules, since strict adherence to any single policy can have legal implications for medical practitioners. Though the guidelines were developed by well-qualified researchers and reflect current information they may not meet the needs of all patients. Clinicians sued for malpractice may have trouble explaining their actions if they adopt a single healthcare policy and refuse to deviate from it.

The cost of healing pressure ulcers across multiple health care settings

Article Abstract:

Most of the cost of treating pressure ulcers is generated by patients who must be hospitalized for these lesions. A study of the treatment of pressure ulcers in various care settings shows 80% of the cost for pressure ulcer treatment is caused by the patients requiring hospitalization, who constitute 4% of the group studied. When complications can be avoided, pressure ulcers are treated with considerable success and at low cost in long-term care.

Wound care pain management

Article Abstract:

Pain management for wounds, especially for pressure and ischemic ulcers, is a relatively new area of study. Many patients with pressure ulcers experience severe pain, and there is little evidence to suggest greater severity of bedsores causes less pain. Correct management of pressure ulcer pain may involve physical and occupational therapy, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, and a range of medication.
