Let the compass be your guide

Article Abstract:

The National Committee on Quality Assurance (NCQA) has created Quality Compass to help consumers pick highly rated managed care organizations. The program enables users to search regional information about health care providers that has been culled from the Health Plan Employer Data and Information Set. Other media coverage of this database is limited, such as what is published in such periodicals as U.S. News and Consumer Reports.

Back talk over contracts

Article Abstract:

A 1996 Pacific Business Group on Health study found that doctors feel that their contract negotiations with health plans have deteriorated since 1993. Only 54% of those surveyed were pleased with their overall relationships with health maintenance organizations. Market pressures and overcapacity are cited as reasons. Some physician networks have found the study useful in their own negotiations.

Point-of-service: staying alive

Article Abstract:

The point-of-service medical care plan is more popular in 1996. Patients can choose out-of-network doctors for additional fees. A total of 42% of health maintenance organizations offered point-of-service plans in 1991, 73% offered them in 1995 and over 80% offer them in 1996. This increase is a result of health maintenance organizations accepting the reality of the marketplace.
