Making the purchase decision: factors other than price

Article Abstract:

Hospital purchasing managers need to consider factors other than price when attempting to decrease supply costs. They must keep clinicians informed of the benefits of cost-saving proposals and allow them to participate in purchasing decisions. Purchasing managers must also explain to them the meaning of total quality management. Product specifications must be closely monitored by both purchasing managers and clinicians. Both parties must also be prepared to review purchasing decisions. Lastly, purchasing managers need to keep a close watch on product failures since these also add on costs.

Developing self-managed logistic service teams

Article Abstract:

A team-based approach and multiskill training of employees has enabled Mount Sinai Hospital Medical Center of Chicago, IL, to address weaknesses in its logistics activities. The changes, which was implemented by the hospital's materials management department, brought down barriers between different links in the supply chain and enabled all team members to do all tasks from receiving to processing patient charges. It also improved the replenishment rate and minimized random rush orders due to the greater coordination between nursing staff and supply personnel.

Managing a manual system

Article Abstract:

A manual system of material management can be cost-effective if it establishes accountability and makes use of a simple form that elicits the necessary information. To establish accountability, the use of signature cards is critical since it defines individual responsibility for the requisition and purchasing of equipment and supplies. Acquiring inventory data can be made easier by using a traveling requisition form that lists down the quantity being requisitioned, the available quantity and the date needed.
