Medical management of the patient with an ectopic pregnancy

Article Abstract:

Methotrexate treatment appears to be an economical and effective option for removing an uncomplicated ectopic pregnancy. Guidelines are presented for methotrexate treatment. Detecting an ectopic pregnancy early can prevent further complications and allow for this drug treatment. Side effects are minimal but follow-up is longer for drug treatment compared to surgery. Women treated with methotrexate should seek an evaluation early in future pregnancies due to a higher risk for repeated ectopic pregnancies.

Pregnancy-induced hypertension, preeclampsia, and eclampsia

Article Abstract:

Considerable research has been directed to locate an underlying pathology for pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH), preeclampsia, and eclampsia. A report from the Public Health Service Expert Panel on the Content of Prenatal Care suggests changing most visits from the end of pregnancy to a preconception visit, some visits in the second trimester, and increased visits toward the end of pregnancy. Studies also suggest using magnesium sulfate and low-dose aspirin to prevent PIH.

Prevention of hepatitis B and C transmission during pregnancy and the first year of life

Article Abstract:

Many hepatitis B infections in newborns can be prevented with appropriate screening during pregnancy, treatment after birth, and follow-up with the infant's pediatrician. Pregnant women infected with hepatitis C (HCV) appear to be at minimal risk of transmitting the virus to their fetus unless they also have HIV. There does not appear to be any benefit associated with treating infants exposed to HCV.
