Microcomputer Use Comes of Age in Hospitals

Article Abstract:

A survey of microcomputer use in Illinois hospitals is discussed. This survey is conducted by the First Illinois Healthcare Financial Management Association chapter. Graphs of current and future microcomputer use and microcomputer use by various employee types are provided. A graph of microcomputer type and percent of use is also included. A table representing departments and their use of microcomputers is provided. Most hospitals involved with this survey are currently using microcomputers.

The Microcomputer Hardware Purchase Decision from the User's Viewpoint

Article Abstract:

Steps in purchasing a microcomputer are discussed. First, buyer should familiarize themselves with computer jargon. It is suggested that buyers determine their software needs before deciding what hardware to purchase. Another suggestion is to actually try a selection to determine how easy it will be to use. Last, maintenance should be an important factor in purchase selection.

Improving Management Technology: Current Realities and Future Expectations

The use of microcomputers in hospitals is discussed. Current technology is examined along with projections for future microcomputer use. Other areas of specific discussion include: 1) data systems that can combine information from various departments, 2) diagnosis-related groups (DRGs), 3) decision support systems, 4) other software and 5) microcomputer-mainframe links.
