Move over, JCAHO

Article Abstract:

Crowley, LA-based American Legion Hospital is the first US hospital to do away with the Joint Commission Accreditation of Healthcare Organization (JCAHO). The firm shifted to ISO 9000, a set of quality standards employed mainly by manufacturing businesses and several foreign hospitals. According to Legion CEO Leonard Spears the move to junk the JCAHO was made since the ISO process is less disruptive than the JCAHO required inspection in every three years. The shift was also made because Spears believes in the idea of not being dictated on how to run the business. Instead, the ISO only require one to have quality management system and to accomplish its goals.

Picking a peck of trouble

Article Abstract:

Hospital executives received a memo over the use of PSO or provider-sponsored organizations, which integrate financing and delivery of care. The memo advised hospitals to be extra careful in their use of PSOs, particularly in sharing patient information, for they will encounter reproval from law enforcers. According to Bruce Fried, former director if HCFA's Center for Health Plans and Providers in Washington, the memo comes following the shift of law enforcement community from fraud-and-abuse probes on healthcare to such thing called managed care.
