PROs, providers and physicians to collaborate on cardiac outcomes

Article Abstract:

The Cooperative Cardiovascular Project plans to evaluate cardiac care of medicare patients by both physicians and hospitals. The data will be collected from Alabama, Colorado, Connecticut, Iowa, Utah and Wisconsin using the Uniform Clinical Data Set to eliminate variations in recordkeeping practices. The project has two goals: improving peer review organization usage and demonstrating that care can be improved by cooperation among organizations. Participation in the project will require additional time and analysis by physicians.

Physician-to-population ratios: which ones meet needs?

Article Abstract:

Physician to population ratios are reported by the Graduate Medical Education National Advisory Committee (GMENAC) as well as the AMA and other groups. Experts say these statistical data bases may not reflect the needs of a particular community. Hospitals can study their records to determine numbers of patients admitted for each medical specialty and compare these figures with GMENAC and AMA projections. Also, hospital staff developers should consider whether certain physicians may leave the community or retire.

AAFP: reform hinges on more family MDs

Article Abstract:

The implementation of several proposals in the American Academy of Family Physicians' (AAFP) health care reform plan depends on increasing the number of generalist physicians. For example, the AAFP's proposal that all patients be assigned a personal physician cannot be enacted until the number of generalist physicians increases from 30% to 50% of all physicians. The AAFP recommends that Congress enact legislation to encourage medical schools to train larger numbers of general physicians.
