Partners by design: urban/rural clinic affiliations

Article Abstract:

Urban hospitals are pooling resources with rural ones to reduce costs and improve service. For example, Huntington Memorial Hospital in rural Huntington, IN, is affiliated with urban Fort Wayne's Lutheran Hospital of Indiana. Lutheran has streamlined the admissions process at Lutheran for Huntington patients, and the hospitals loan each other medical staff if there is a shortage. In addition, Lutheran sends visiting specialists to Huntington and the two hospitals operate a van shuttle between them. Additional examples of hospital affiliation are presented.

Service means business

Article Abstract:

Market share in the health care industry is won by customer service, not low prices, according to Andy Riddell, CEO of AtlantiCare Medical Center, based in Lynn, MA. Riddell urged officials of the Harvard Health Community Plan to observe services at AtlantiCare before signing a contract with the center. All hospital employees, including cleaning staff, are trained to communicate with patients and to provide services desired by the patients.

Damage control

Article Abstract:

Hospitals that treat victims of teen-aged shooting sprees may be unprepared to handle journalists' demands for information. After a school shooting in Willamette, OR, for example, hospitals in the area moved reporters to city hall to free space for hospital employees to handle the emergency. In addition to giving teachers instruction in first aid, communities should draw up plans to deal with such incidents.
