Percutaneous techniques for the treatment of cerebrovascular disease

Article Abstract:

Percutaneous techniques for the treatment of cerebrovascular disease and care of patients afterward are being studied at Washington Adventists Hospital (Takoma Park, MD). They are potentially safer and more cost-effective than the alternatives and can be used to treat lesions that are not accessible surgically. Percutaneous techniques, involving the technique of stent-supported carotid angioplasty (SSCA), may be an alternative method, especially for those most at risk, to carotid endartectomy. Though effective, the latter method has limitations.

Distributive justice and HIV disease in intensive care

Article Abstract:

Critical health care professionals need to confront the ethical dilemmas raised by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and its terminal stage, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Diseases which resist treatment and cure create ethical conflict. Allocating health care needs to be based on facts and policies which avoid discriminating against such persons. Nurses need to view themselves as contributing to making ethical decisions about such patients.
