Physicians: the rate of change accelerates

Article Abstract:

Many aspects of a physician's practice are being re-evaluated in light of health care reform, including their contribution to health care costs, the proper mix of primary care physicians to specialists and the level of physicians' salaries. However, despite the stress this creates for physicians, relations between hospitals and physicians are good. This is partly because hospital administrators have been involving physicians in important decisions, and this pattern should set the tone for physician-hospital relations as health care reform is implemented.

Family violence: breaking the cycle

Article Abstract:

Hospitals, which often see the results of domestic violence first-hand, have a special responsibility to help stop it. Incidents of domestic violence are increasing, and they can occur in homes that are rich, poor, urban or rural. Hospital executives have denied the problem until recently, but they need to set up in-hospital programs and coordinate their efforts with the work of local anti-violence community groups to support physicians who treat abuse victims.

The billing office and the CEO

Article Abstract:

Hospital CEOs need to be able to explain their institution's billing practices to the general public so that accusations over bill inflation can be prevented. It has become crucial that CEOs demystify accounting procedures so that consumers understand their medical bills, especially since Rep John Dingell has charged hospitals with using creative accounting practices to inflate bills.
