Private Payment for Long-Term Care: The Untapped Mechanism

Article Abstract:

With a rapidly growing elderly population, there is an increasing interest in long-term care. As the population grows, public-sector support is not expected to maintain its current level. Areas covered include population characteristics and sources of payment from national foundations to self-payment by individuals. Solutions to the funding problems include: 1. health retirement accounts, 2. life-care communities, 3. reverse annuity mortgages, 4. family provided service with tax credits, 5. tax incentives for insurance carriers. Jennings and Krentz suggest that long-term care providers need to search for private funds to fill in the gaps not covered by public programs.

A personalized case study of a patient suffering from a severe myocardial infarction is presented to offer the human aspects of cardiac illness and treatment. The patient's own words describe his experience in the intensive care unit and relates his sense of fear and hope. The support of the patient's wife and family is also noted.
