Recurrence of initial pressure ulcer in persons with spinal cord injuries

Article Abstract:

Patients with spinal cord injuries often suffer from recurring bedsores, or pressure ulcers, for a variety of reasons other than the surgical or nonsurgical techniques used to treat the ulcers. For example, research indicates recurrence tends to be higher among diabetics, smokers, and the least mobile. The place of the ulcer and the patient's age can also play a role. Pressure ulcers often strike spinal cord patients and the recurrence rate can reach 35%.

Risk and assessment of pressure ulcer development in surgical patients

Article Abstract:

More research is needed to determine the risks for pressure ulcers in surgical patients and how they can best be prevented. A review of the literature from 1960 to 1998 found that most studies of pressure ulcers did not include many surgical patients. These patients have a high risk of pressure ulcers because they may be immobile for great lengths of time. Some studies may be outdated because the care of surgical patients has changed.

Measuring prevalence and incidence of pressure ulcers

Article Abstract:

The occurrences of pressure ulcers such as bedsores can be measured to analyze the success of intervention for prevention. Two main categories to measure are prevalence rates and incidence rates. Results can identify populations at risk for pressure ulcers, such as those in long term care. Prevention strategies can be better planned with the new data.
