Reengineering: deja vu all over again

Article Abstract:

Reengineering is replacing TQM as the key to improving hospital efficiency. However, it is argued that the basic assumptions of reengineering cannot be applied to hospitals while claims supporting reengineering are not feasible for hospitals. Nonetheless, hospitals should consider adopting reengineering if doing so would improve their image to stakeholders and increase their access to resources such as physicians and managed care contracts.

The adoption of corporate restructuring by hospitals

Article Abstract:

The reorganization of nonprofit hospital management in Massachusetts is profiled because it took place faster here than in other parts of the US. This study attempted to discern whether early reorganizations would be different from later reorganizations. There were no differences but all hospitals did go through a major episode of reorganization and then subsided in their efforts.

The implementation of total quality management in hospitals: how good is the fit?

Article Abstract:

Two assumptions in the adoption of total quality management need to be considered in applying the management philosophy to hospitals to ensure its success. These are the hierarchical management control over the technical core and the dominance of rational decision making. However, these assumptions have limitations, such as physicians' lack of commitment.
