An open-and shut-contract

Article Abstract:

Kaiser Permanente's auditing contract with the California Public Employee's Retirement System or CalPERS may not cover all information desired. CalPERs has argued that public employees should not be penalized for the Oakland, CA-based HMO's $270 million loss in 1997. Kaiser, however countered that the rate hikes are needed for meeting the requirements of the 330,000 public employees' health care needs. The Kaiser review may reportedly spur a raise of up to 10.75% in 1999 rates that would result in other health plans raising their demands as well. However, after the rate negotiations for 1999, an average 7.3 % hike resulted for 10 HMOs covered.
