Shopping for surgery: consumers want to talk outcomes - and have a say in their care decisions

Article Abstract:

Physicians are responding to the trend of the informed consumer by sharing details about treatment options and outcomes with patients. As a result, patients and physicians are becoming partners in the treatment process. Doctors are helping patients choose treatments based on the desired outcome, rather than physician preference. Health insurers also benefit because informed patients often choose treatments that are less costly. Blue Plus is developing a video to help consumers learn to participate in health decisions.

Biotech on the brink

Article Abstract:

Hospital pharmacy directors anticipate working in concert with laboratories to monitor the effects of biotech drugs on patients. Some pharmacy directors believe that the increased use of such drugs may expand the role of pharmacists in tracking the effects of the drugs and choosing when to administer them. For example, hospital pharmacies were forced to develop protocols and guidelines for appropriate use of the drug Centoxin, which is only effective on certain patients of the potentially fatal condition sepsis.

Fewer nuclear waste sites poses problems for hospitals

Article Abstract:

The lessening numbers and the refusal by nuclear waste disposal facilities to accept nuclear waste from members outside their compacts are posing some difficult times ahead for hospitals. Michigan does not have a waste disposal site nor is it a member of any compact where it could obtain access to a site. A proposed site in Southern California is embroiled in controversy, but is expected to proceed. The lack of disposal sites creates a financial and operational strain on hospitals practicing nuclear medicine.
