Slashing cycle time in all we do: techniques for success

Article Abstract:

Reduced cycle time in such functions as inventory control, production and purchasing would improve a company's responsiveness, and thus, make it more competitive. Cycle time improvement programs must begin with establishing standard definitions, agreed-on methods of calculation and publicized goals. All processes must develop from batch to flow through 'pull' systems by reducing cycle time. Efficiency must be improved in operations where there are bottlenecks. The selection of cycle time projects must be done carefully to ensure success and continued funding.

The application of radio frequency bar coding technology allows substantial improvements in accuracy and cycle time reductions in Lockheed Martin Tactical Aircraft Systems. The radio frequency bar coding technology was applied in the company's warehousing, receiving, kitting and transportation departments. An important result of its use was in the eradiation of inventory such as an entire commodity of parts called operational supplies.

Profiting from cycle time reductions

Article Abstract:

Eastman Kodak Company achieved a 50% or more improvement in product quality, cost, and cycle-time reduction through the education and training of personnel and the reorganization of the flow of materiel. This was sustained by the establishment of human resources departments because, as the company achieved a 50% reduction in cycle-time, it found other areas that needed the skills of the displaced employees.
