Techniques for managing quality

Article Abstract:

Healthcare providers can learn new techniques for quality management from the industrial sector. While the healthcare industry has long used the technique of measurement in its quality management efforts, industrial quality management science uses other equally powerful tools, such as quality planning. Healthcare institutions that use all the basic tools and techniques of quality management will thrive in the coming years, but quality management is an evolving science and healthcare administrators must keep pace with new developments and techniques.

The patient as the pivot point for quality in health care delivery

Article Abstract:

The healthcare industry and the patient interact in many ways and the patient functions in four roles in the healthcare setting. These roles are as recipient, as supplier, as participant and as product, and each role presents a different implication for input in the delivery of quality healthcare. A conceptual model of quality and quality improvement is developed that takes account of each patient role. How the model impacts the healthcare provider's management and strategy are also discussed.

Continually improving governance

Article Abstract:

Governance can leverage quality improvement within an organization by providing strategic leadership, assessing performance and creating an environment of ongoing education. This is a very important role, one that is rarely adopted by healthcare institution boards of directors. A discussion is presented of the process of governance and how governance groups can identify, develop and employ leverage within the healthcare setting.
