The Resource Management Initiative in the English National Health Service

Article Abstract:

Successful hospital management requires that medical practitioners become involved in the hospital's organizational development. The UK National Health Service has developed a program that will aid physicians make better judgments on the effective utilization of available resources. Called the Resource Management Initiative (RMI), the program also acts as medical auditing body that guards against the use of unnecessary diagnostic and treatment techniques by health care personnel. A review of six experimental RMI sites shows that the program can improve hospital management strategies and patient care.

HCMR Interview: Carolyn C. Roberts

Article Abstract:

Carolyn C. Roberts is a woman to emulate. In a span of 10 years, she has steered the Copley Hospital of Vermont to an institution dedicated to the welfare of the people and the community. As a board member of the American Hospital Association (AHA), Roberts led the move to institute health care reforms that befits the people's needs, thus, serving as a model for women health administrators. She has advice though for novices in the field: explore all options.
