The role of managed care "products" in managed care "plans."

Article Abstract:

Data on the nature and composition of the managed care products provided by health maintenance organizations, independent practice associations and preferred provider organizations are presented. Analysis of the data indicate that national healthcare organizations now provide multiple product offerings. The offerings are intended to provide for customer needs and to lessen the problems in the transition to traditional health care. While the plans use a common provider network for different products, there are many variations as to arrangements with and the compensation of physicians.

Managed care, distance traveled, and hospital market definition

Article Abstract:

Managed care has not had a major effect on the distance that patients travel for care in this study of 14 California counties. The specialized services that particular hospitals offer in specific areas has an effect on the distance that patients travel rather than the type of insurance that the patient has.
