Transient neonatal diabetes mellitus or an exaggerated steroid response? A case study

Article Abstract:

Hyperglycemia is a common occurrence in extremely premature infants and requires close attention and intervention. These premature babies have problems maintaining normal blood glucose levels in spite of normal or below normal glucose infusion rates. Some experience hyperglycemia intermittently during hospitalization because of infection, medications, overinfusion of glucose, or stress. Transient neonatal diabetes mellitus (TNDM) is an uncommon diagnosis that is used when other reasons for the hyperglycemia cannot be established. A case is discussed in which dexamethasone therapy may have contributed to a hyperglycemic episode.

Biomedical Equipment in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: Is It a Stressor?

Article Abstract:

Nurses working in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) reported their greatest and least sources of stress in an effort to advocate the best practices for a new NICU. The number one sources of stress was caused by insufficient or malfunctioning equipment and emergencies in the delivery room. The inability to meet patients' needs and their strenuous workloads were ranked next highest.
