Variables that influence consumers' inferences about physician ability and accountability

Article Abstract:

Factors that influence consumer perception about the competence of doctors, concern for patients, treatment quality and accountability have been studied. Results indicate that patient involvement with treatment decisions had a significant impact on how the clinical competence and concern for patient welfare of doctors are perceived. It has also been observed that patients view doctors less positively when the latter receive financial incentives in exchange for practicing cost-effective medicine. New treatment practices have no major influence on how consumers view the accountability of physicians.

National health insurance: lessons from the United States experiment

Article Abstract:

Health policy debates have centered on increased access to health care at lower costs. A Medicare health insurance program for individuals with end-stage renal disease can be utilized to assess the feasibility of a national health insurance program for people of all ages.

Agency theory: a framework for analyzing physician services

Article Abstract:

Salary contracts are a better choice than fee-for-service or capitation contracts with individual physicians for third-party payers of health care. This is shown using the agency theory, wherein one party furnishes goods or services to another party in exchange for compensation. The agency theory provides a framework for formulating physician selection procedures and compensation contracts.
