What the upper Midwest knows: region leads the nation in net patient revenues

Article Abstract:

A survey by Kurt Salmon Associates Inc Hamilton/KSA reveals that hospitals in the northern Middle West realize greater proportions of their revenue from outpatient care than those in other areas. Some analysts predict that by the year 2000 half of hospital revenues will derive from outpatient care. However, ambulatory diagnostic centers are not expected to gain wide acceptance. Providers foresee a doubling in enrollees of managed care plans. For instance, managed care is predicted for half of New York State's Medicaid patients.

Seven historical lessons about community relations

Article Abstract:

A review of 160 articles spanning the past 60 years on the subject of hospital-community relations revealed the importance of such issues as responsibility for the image of a hospital, cost accountability, communication with the public and competition among hospitals. The changing role of the hospital in society and the impact of that role are also addressed. Finally, the importance of balancing the hospital's image as community institution with its more mechanical image is emphasized.

The programs will provide support and information for physicians and other personnel in diagnosing and treating elder, spouse and child abuse.
