A 69-year-old man with myasthenia gravis and a mediastinal mass

Article Abstract:

Symptoms of myasthenia gravis in a patient with a mass in their chest may be a sign of thymoma. Thymoma is a tumor of the thymus gland, which is located in the upper part of the chest. The case of a 69-year-old man illustrates the connection between myasthenia gravis and thymoma. Thymomas are found in about 15% of patients with myasthenia gravis overall, but only 3% of younger patients have thymoma compared to 35% of older patients. About 35% of patients with thymoma have myasthenia gravis.
