A chorionic gonadotropin-sensitive mutation in the follicle-stimulating hormone receptor as a cause of familial gestational spontaneous ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome

Article Abstract:

Researchers describe three sisters who had ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome caused by a mutation in the gene for the receptor for follicle-stimulating hormone. This hormone stimulates the ovaries, causing ovulation. In these women, the mutation in the receptor caused it to become more sensitive to the hormone and to chorionic gonadotropin. This caused the formation of many cysts in the ovaries, especially during pregnancy.

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome due to a mutation in the follicle-stimulating hormone receptor

Article Abstract:

Researchers present the case of a 40-year-old woman who developed ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome during each of her four pregnancies. This syndrome occurs when the ovaries are stimulated excessively, producing many cysts. It is often a side effect of fertility drugs, but in this case, the woman had a mutation in the gene for the receptor for follicle stimulating hormone. This is the hormone that induces ovulation.

The pathogenesis of the ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome

Article Abstract:

A mutation in the gene for the receptor for follicle stimulating hormone can cause ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. This condition is characterized by the formation of multiple ovarian cysts. It is usually a side effect of fertility drugs but can also occur spontaneously. It often occurs during pregnancy because the mutated receptor can be stimulated by chorionic gonadotropin.
