A comparative phenotypical analysis of rheumatoid nodules and rheumatoid synovium with special reference to adhesion molecules and activation markers

Article Abstract:

Cell adhesion molecules and activation markers, which modulate inflammatory and destructive processes in rheumatoid arthritis, are present in varying levels in rheumatoid nodules and joint synovial tissue. Researchers examined synovium and rheumatoid nodule samples from patients with the autoimmune arthritis. CD4 T-type white blood cells express the PECAM-1, ICAM-1, and VCAM-1 cell adhesion molecules similarly in synovium and rheumatoid nodules, but the nodules have higher levels of E selectin expression, which mobilizes inflammatory cells, than synovium.

Anti-perinuclear factor compared with the so called "antikeratin" antibodies and antibodies to human epidermis filaggrin, in the diagnosis of arthritides

Article Abstract:

The measurement of several blood antibodies may improve the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Researchers tested blood samples from 279 patients with RA and 213 healthy people. Antiperinuclear factor, antikeratin antibodies, or human epidermis filaggrin antibodies were detected in 52% of patients with RA. Detection of antikeratin antibodies and another rheumatoid antibody increased the diagnostic value of the tests. No single antigen could elicit all of the antibodies.

Effects of a loading dose regimen of three infusions of chimeric monoclonal antibody to tumour necrosis factor alpha (infliximab) in spondyloarthropathy: an open pilot study

Article Abstract:

The drug infliximab appears to be effective in the treatment of a group of rheumatic diseases called spondyloarthropathies. Infliximab is a monoclonal antibody that blocks the activity of tumor necrosis factor alpha.
