Article Abstract:

Medical professionals in the UK should be aware that the switch to the year 2000 could cause certain medical equipment to malfunction. The Medical Devices Agency and the National Health Service Executive have published guidance detailing the actions required to reduce risks associated with medical devices. It will be important to be prepared to switch to an alternative device or procedure at short notice if problems arise. Health visitors, nurses and midwives may also have to discuses the concerns of carers and users about the malfunctioning of medical equipment.

How doe mobile phones affect electromedical devices?: Mobile telephones, radio handsets and pagers all emit electromagnetic waves that can interfere with medical equipment

Article Abstract:

The use of radio equipment in health care settings is cause of for concern due to possible interference with the operation of medical devices. The Medical Devices Agency has examined the risks that mobile communication equipment may pose when used near electromedical devices. It found that emergency services' radio handsets were most likely to cause interference. Risks can be minimized by using pagers, cordless telephones or cell phones.

Cleaning and disinfecting flexible endoscopes

Article Abstract:

Issues are presented concerning the techniques which should be used for the disinfection after cleaning of flexible endoscopes. The guidelines set up by the British Society of Gastroenterology are discussed.
