A dream ticket?

Article Abstract:

There are fears that the UK could follow the example of the US and replace the notion of the specialist nurse with that of the generic nurse. Although the government has no plans to introduce a generic nursing qualification, the emphasis placed on the common foundation program in Project 2000 courses and the introduction of the single RN designation for nurses in various specialities tends to support the idea of the generic nurse. While PREP appears to support a nursing career path of ever-increasing specialization, most nurses will not progress beyond the primary practitioner stage.

Final preparations: though PREP comes into force in April it will not affect all nurses until the year 2001

Article Abstract:

Although the UKCC's PREP will soon be implemented it will not finally affect all nurses, midwives and health visitors until 2001. PREP requires nurses and midwives to complete at least five study days every three years. Study categories include reducing risk including health problem identification, care enhancement including clinical practice and education development such as participating in teaching and learning skills.

Paying the piper

Article Abstract:

Nurses would have more control over continuing education if they paid for it themselves. Colleges are providing more flexible courses in response to needs. Employers finance most continuing education but financial constraints may limit future provision. If nurses took responsibility for personal development they could demand courses relevant to their needs.
