A fair old fight

Article Abstract:

Nurses and elderly people lobbied the UK parliament in March 1997 in an attempt to secure an inquiry into discrimination against the elderly, regarding access to health care. The organisers of the rally were the charity Age Concern and the journal 'Nursing Times.' Labour and Liberal Democrat health spokesmen both supported the lobby, but the Tory health secretary could not support it, maintaining, however, that his party would oppose any discrimination and that special finance to aid provisions for older people had already been allocated.

Plans to introduce a 200 pounds sterling payment to women on low incomes when a baby is born was welcomed by poverty groups.
