A family intervention to delay nursing home placement of patients with Alzheimer disease: a randomized controlled trial

Article Abstract:

Intensive family counseling and support may delay the placement of elderly patients with Alzheimer's disease into nursing homes. Researchers randomly assigned 206 spouse-caregivers of an Alzheimer's patient to receive personalized intensive support (the treatment group) or traditional services (the control group). Those in the treatment group received 2 individual and 4 family counseling sessions, continuous access to a counselors after that and were also enrolled in support groups that met weekly. This reduced the rate of nursing home placement by one-third and lengthened the time the patient remained at home.

Glycine Antagonist in Neuroprotection for Patients With Acute Stroke: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Article Abstract:

The drug gavestinel may not benefit stroke patients, according to a study of 1,367 patients. This drug blocks the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor, which is believed to cause some of the brain damage during a stroke. This drug is one of several neuroprotective drugs that have been studied in efforts to minimize brain damage.

Neuroprotection in Acute Ischemic Stroke

Article Abstract:

Doctors continue to develop potential drugs to limit the amount of brain damage that occurs during a stroke. Unfortunately, none of the drugs that have been tested so far have had a substantial impact on prognosis, including a drug called gavestinel.
