A five-year experience with second-trimester induced abortions: no increase in complication rate as compared to the first trimester

Article Abstract:

Women who undergo an abortion during the second trimester of pregnancy may not experience more complications than women who undergo an abortion during the first trimester. Second trimester abortions are performed using a dilation-and-evacuation procedure and first trimester abortions are performed using suction curettage. Among 3,355 abortions performed between 1986 and 1990, 2,908 were performed using suction curettage before 15 weeks of pregnancy and 447 were performed using a dilation-and-evacuation procedure between 15 and 20 weeks of pregnancy. Three percent of the women who underwent a dilation-and-evacuation procedure developed complications, compared to 5% of the women who underwent suction curettage. Two percent of the women who underwent a second trimester abortion developed an infection, the most common complication, compared to 3% of the women who underwent a first trimester abortion.

Laparoscopy in patients over 60 years old: A prospective, randomized evaluation of laparoscopic versus open adnexectomy

Article Abstract:

A comparison between the objective and subjective parameters of surgical stress following laparoscopic and open adnexectomy in patients older than 60 years old is presented. Results conclude that minimally invasive surgery is of particular benefit to elderly patients if there is a plan in place for appropriate staging and treatment by laparotomy for malignancy.
