A major miner: Virginia's safest active miner receives MSHA honor

Article Abstract:

Dallas Chaffins, a 73-year-old miner and working in mine for more than 55 years, was recognized by the Mine Safety Health Administration's District 5 for his accomplishment. Chaffins has expressed about the technological changes in the mining industry from the time he started his career and has advised the young to be careful and should watch other people they work with to avoid accidents.

Article Abstract:

The growth and safety related concerns of the mining industry are discussed. The statistics of the fatality rate of the coal, minerals mining, metals and oil and gas extraction sectors of the mining industry report a major fall from 2001 to 2002.

NMA: safety is a core value in the mining industry

The safety standards and procedures of the mining industry are discussed. The mining deaths due to occupational hazards have declined by 77% since 1977.
