A medical melting pot

Article Abstract:

There are many health maintenance organizations (HMOs) located in the Pacific Northwest, 24 of which are Portland, OR, Seattle, WA, or Spokane, WA. The Group Health Cooperative of Seattle, WA, is the largest in the region and covers 670,000 in Washington and northern Idaho. In order to prevent financial problems the HMO has partnered with Kaiser Permanente's northwest division, but problems of consumer governance remain.

Physicians opting out of large N.C. HMO

Article Abstract:

Physicians have been canceling their contracts with HealthSource North Carolina, one of the largest HMOs in the state. Physicians protest the decline in their payments, and others are disturbed that the plan decided not to refund its 10% withholds. Other critics say the HealthSource has lost the vision of the original physician-founders after it was acquired by national insurer Cigna Corp.

Fixing a broken system

Article Abstract:

The health system within Washington, DC, is in need of reform.
